Antarctica Takes It! 'Constellations' Cassette
|
*New!* LST-24 - Antarctica Takes It!
"Constellations" Cassette
|
$5.00
|
Lost Sound Tapes says: "Dylan McKeever writes magical pop songs with 60's swagger that are full of soul. His 'The Penguin League' topped many 2006 year end album lists. 'Constellations' has expanded upon the ideas of the first album while adding more male/female harmonies, tender ukulele ballads, and head first exuberance. Dylan is also a member of the band James Rabbit, whom Lost Sound Tapes has previously released on cassette, and receives some assistance from them on the album 'Constellations'.
The album cover features beautiful full color artwork by Maria Schoettler. First edition of 100 clear blue tapes with color labels.
CD version available from the band via Bandcamp or HDIFTBL? Records in the U.K." |
|
Pangea 'Pangea' Cassette
|
*New!* LST-23 - Pangea
"Pangea" Cassette
|
$5.00
|
Lost Sound Tapes says: "11 tracks of wild, catchy, pop punk like only Pangea can do and they can do no wrong. The last song on the album even utilizes auto-tuned vocals, what?! They've transformed over the last couple years from playing soulful folk pop songs to blistering, charlie brown punk songs. This description sucks, this tape DOES NOT SUCK.
Okay, so anyways, Pangea are from the greater Los Angeles area and are part of the Griznar music collective which includes great bands like Harvest Moon Society and God Equals Genocide. Inspired by bay area pop punk bands, these songs will make you want to dance like an electrocuted squirrel.
First edition of 100 lemon yellow tapes with silver foil labels." |
|
Andrew Mello/weakness 'Split' Cassette
|
LST-22 - Andrew Mello/weakness
"Split" Cassette
|
$5.00
|
Lost Sound Tapes says: "This tape is a split between Andrew Mello of Massachusetts and weakness of Ohio. Together they are some of the best 'one man bands' I've had the pleasure of listening to. On one side you have a full album by Andrew Mello entitled 'What I Say Isn't What I Mean' and on the flip side there's the entire debut album by weakness (including two bonus tracks).
Andrew Mello has often been compared to the Unicorns. He plays all the instruments and does all the recording/production. I often describe weakness as sounding like Weezer but with a lot more distortion.
1st edition of 100 copies, lavender colored cassette tapes, and artwork for both bands applied directly to the tape cases." |
|
Various Artists 'Ukulele, Mekulele, Wekulele' Cassette
|
LST-21 - Various Artists
"Ukulele, Mekulele, Wekulele" Cassette
|
$5.00
|
Lost Sound Tapes says: "Second of a three-part ukulele compilation series! FINALLY! Ukulele & So Can I was volume one and it was released back in 2006 as Lost Sound Tapes #2. Not only are all the songs on the new Ukulele, Mekulele, Wekulele from all different bands than the first comp, there are 4 more of them (27 tracks in all). Jacob Borshard, Hermit Thrushes, Yoyoyo Acapulco, MJ Hibbet, I Hate You Just Kidding, Factors Of Four, and Blanket Truth to name a few.
This first release by LST that was not dubbed in a bedroom, but was in fact duplicated by National Audio Company in Missouri. First run of 200 hawaiian blue foil tapes, with white imprinting, and a handwritten insert. The cover is a linoleum cut, block print by Jon Manning." |
|
Math The Band 'Don't Worry' Cassette
|
LST-19 - Math The Band
"Don't Worry" Cassette
|
$5.00
|
Lost Sound Tapes: "Math The Band is a force to be reckoned with! Poppy, fun, dance tunes with lots and lots of analog synthesizer. Not to mention more BPM than any rational person would actually need. This duo puts on one of the most fun live shows this side of the Milky Way galaxy. This album takes a slightly more aggressive turn from their previous Atom And His Package-esque recordings and they are all the better for it. Think Andrew WK but cuter and just as much fun.
First run of 200 baby blue cassette tapes with handstamped and printed kraft paper covers." |
|
Madeline 'White Flag' Cassette
|
LST-17 - Madeline
"White Flag" Cassette
|
$5.00
|
Lost Sound Tapes says: "Here we have the third full length album entitled 'White Flag' from Athens, GA native, Madeline Adams, known by most as simply 'Madeline'. Her songs are hauntingly beautiful with personal lyrics and a stunning voice. 'White Flag' is the culmination of three years of hard work from Madeline while she enlisted many of her fellow Athens-based musicians including members of the Elephant 6 Collective. The CD version of the album is available from Orange Twin Records.
Second edition of 100 copies with clear yellow tapes, printed labels, and photocopied covers." |
|
Faux Jerome 'Faux Jerome' Cassette
|
LST-14 - Faux Jerome
"Faux Jerome" Cassette
|
$5.00
|
Lost Sound Tapes says: "Faux Jerome (pronounced FOX Jerome) is Tomm Johnson aka Tricera aka Track Mastra's new project with Tai Faux. |
iji 'Soup / Salad' Cassette
|
*New!* LST-11 - iji
"Soup / Salad" Cassette
|
$5.00
|
Lost Sound Tapes says: "Not a single album, but a double album! Part one: Salad is a new set of tight, upbeat, fun songs. Part two: Soup is an epic side of experimental pop interspersed with stories about melon. Just the right amount of distortion and an extra helping of female backing vocals this time.

Actual Birds
"Vive La Fantastique Avec Actual Birds and Friends" CD
(Cassanova Temptations) |
$5.00
|
Brainwashed says: "I'm left completely confused listening to this album, trying to keep up with Dustin Krcatovich's wily, random sense of humor and creative, scattershot imagination. Musically, Krcatovich is ubiquitous. One moment his music is the product of exposure to home recordings and pop music and at another it is the product of listening to "Revolution 9" too many times." |
|
|
Afternoon Brother
"Maiden America" Cassette
(Life's Blood) |
$5.00
|
Life's Blood says: "Listening to Afternoon Brother is sort of like watching two people fervently argue. You are totally lost between the two streams of vocalization, and the structure of their sentences is lost in the increasing tension: you can make out a word here, a word there, logical building blocks from each superficially opposing side meshing together. And then, like many of our most energetic arguments, it all becomes immediately clear: there was no tangible argument. Despite their dogmatic differences, both people were on the same page all along. Except with guitars." |
|
|
Alas, Alak, Alaska/Whitman
"Split" 7"
(Folktale) |
$5.00
|
Folktale says: "This record will simply blow yr mind. On this record we combined the manic, smog infested folk rambles of Whitman with the spaced-out, naturally grown carols of the mystic princess Alas, Alak, Alaska! Northern and southern California meet on this record in the most beautiful way possible. On this record Whitman turns over a new leaf, producing a clattering whispered folk ballad as well as a skuzzed out pop song. Alas, Alak, Alaska! produces some of her most beautiful work yet, with two songs that drift into one another with a catchy flow as magnificent as a warm, California summer night. Comes on black vinyl with pink labels, with letterpressed covers, and a large fold-out, hand numbered insert. Limited to 300 copies." |
|
|
Amina Althea
"Carpet Collections" Cassette
(Friends And Relatives) |
$5.00
|
Lost Sound Tapes says: "Most excellent tape from Amina Althea, who used to be in that band Lava Lava with Spoonboy! The tape spans 32 minutes with stories, acapella tracks, beautiful folk pop songs, and lighthearted sound experimentation. Hearkens back to the first Mirah LP on Yo Yo Recordings. Lo-Fi is the Right-Fi. There's a surprising amount of flute/recorder in these intimate sounding 'bedroom recordings'." |
|
|
Amina Althea/Christian Brady
"Split" 7"
(Friends And Relatives) |
$5.00
|
Friends and Relatives says: "amina althea (lava lava, the slow lotion) and
christian brady (mass movement of the moth) each offer four songs per side of compelling and 'drag you along' pop songs using steel drums, ukeleles, machines, guitars, violins, percussive sounds, tapes, etc. with the help of some friends. here's "these songs are about layers. a linguistic geography of isolation. like in the baltimore aquarium when you can see the bellies of the sharks above and around you, but you're not really scared." co-released with steal and break records, rumphius recordings and christian brady." |
|
|
Andy Brazendale
"05 to 08" Cassette
(Fox Pop Recording Co.) |
$5.00
|
Indie Pages says: "As the title hints, this is a collection of home-recordings from the last few years from this Australian fellow. Some of his older songs on the first side remind me of the Marbles, except for his oldest one, "Cold Locked Cupboards", which is more in the quiet, acoustic Elliott Smith vein. His three songs from this year, however, are a lot closer to Grandaddy in their slower moments (especially the hushed vocals), with "Surely Enough" being a dead ringer (complete with cascading synth noises)." |
|
|
Beat Mark
"Debut" Cassette
(Burger Records) |
$4.00
|
Burger Records says: "Chill catchy pop sounds from France! 250 pressed and hand-numbered!
1. Breezing! 2. Odd Machine 3. Humument 4. Kid Bites 5. Purple Glow 6. It's Very Knife 7. Cool Fur" |
|
|
Besties, The
"Bone Valley Deposit" 7"
(Hugpatch) |
$5.00
|
Lawrence.com says: "Kelly Waldrop and Marisa Bergquist met each other in the second grade, and have been best friends ever since. Having added new "Besties" on drums and guitar as adults, this Brooklyn foursome has been creating short, saccharine pop tunes that one listener describes as "a polka-dot dress coming to life and playing the keyboards." The band is touring to support its second 7" of twee, girl-fronted organ & guitar rock."
BONUS: Bone-colored vinyl! |
|
|
Blocks / Mugrack
"Christmas" Cassette
(Fzsedkt) |
$3.00
|
Blocks says: "Now, if you're wondering, 'Why a cassette?', this music might not be for you. Perhaps, though, you know someone who remembers listening to their Walkman on the bus ride or walk to school, and would love an opportunity to put the iPod down for one second and re-live those innocent days with the warm, fuzzy hiss of actual recorded sound as opposed to the sequence of binary numbers that comprises our current listening experience. And is it not possible that you know someone who enjoys homemade artifacts? Is it really that out of the question? blocks and Mugrack do not think so.
And, therefore, from them to you, recorded in parts of Pennsylvania and Scotland, the best Christmas music they could make ... in one week." |
|
|
Boyracer
"It's Not True Grit, It's Real Dirt" 7"
(555 / HHBTM / Yellow Mica / Parapop / Phonostatique) |
$5.00
|
Darla says: "8 tracks. Boyracer, unstoppable as ever, and champions of the indie-underworld spew forth a new EP packed with fizzy pop. This 7" single, (their 17th 7" release if you were counting), is a DOUBLE GROOVED single, (the song you get is depends on where the needle drops). The EP contains 4 fast noisy songs and 4 acoustic 4-track home recordings, including Boyracer’s take on The Softies “Its Love”. Limited to 500 copies worldwide." |
|
|
Boyracer/Beatnik Filmstars
"Split" 7"
(555) |
$5.00
|
555 Recs says: "It had to happen at some point, a split with our much respected lofi transatlantic cousins. 3 tracks each, all exclusive, and very cheeky label artwork that may just get us into trouble at some point. Racer songs are brisk and bright, Beatniks lead song "Exs and Zeros" is sincerly one of their best in a back catalogue of impressive calibre. 250 copies."
Darla says: "Both Beatnik Filmstars and Boyracer have a prolific and respected back catalogue, as this soon-to-be-much-sought-after EP testifies. Cheeky label art and hand screened sleeve. All tracks exclusive. Limited 250 copies USA. BEATNIK FLIMSTARS exes and zeros / wheres yr horse gone / pig sick / BOYRACER a rockabilly ruse / goals / sentiment." |
|
|
Boyracer/Mytty Archer
"Split" 7"
(555 / Brittle Records) |

Co-release from Brittle and 555 Records and available there as well as here. The Boyracer songs are awesome and.... yeah, the search for something new to say about Boyracer. He's a cowboy. A Cowpunk. |
Brother Mitya
"Home Recordings" Cassette
(Folktale) |
$5.00
|
Folktale says: "Good things come to those who wait. This here is a long awaited follow up to Brother Mitya’s 2005 CDR “Melting Wax Daisies…”. It’s a collection of nine songs that were literally saved from the wreckage of a house fire that destroyed his home in Arcata, Ca. in February of 2008. The songs themselves are delicate and sound like they could break at any given moment. On this release he has a bit more direct and less raspy vocal delivery, a lot of times making the songs more catchy but at the same time not abandoning his incredibly unique vocal stylings either. Classical guitar with whispered lyrics, occasional accompaniment, and various sound collages, all soaked in a layer of warm, lo-fi hiss. Black cassettes with printed labels and color covers designed by Kristina Collantes with an insert that was saved from the flames." |
|
|

|
|
Campfires
"Burning Rivers, TV Flickers, Drifting Off To Bed" Cassette
(Leftist Nautical Antiques) |
$5.00
|
Leftist Nautical Antiques says: "From Jeff Walls' insert description, 'These songs are about rust and deep water. These songs are about cold and dying, and about laying with your back on the sand in the summer and staring at stars. They are about a rundown little section of the United States and about how everything has a story and is TELLING a story and you just have to listen. The events in these songs all occur in one evening in a place that is mostly imaginary but is a lot like my hometown in southwestern Michigan. As the day rolls into night each little fragment of a story is swept up like dry leaves into the darkening sky. Everything isn’t going to be okay. We know that, and it’s alright.' Couldn’t be better said. Metropolitan rust belt vignettes drenched in sublimity. Like nothing I have ever heard. Edition of 100 dark, night blue tapes with j-card designed by Jeff Walls (Campfires) complete with descriptive insert and download for digitalized enjoyment. The tapes have all 8 songs on both sides, so just flip to enjoy again." |

|
Cartoon Monster
"The Dying Sea" CD
(Now Hereness) |
$5.00
|
CD Baby says: "In 2005, after moving to Portland,OR, he set out to make his fullest, most elaborate album to date, The Dying Sea. In his first official release, he layers quavering vocals, subtle lyrics, soft beats and rumbling keyboards to create an atmosphere utterly unique yet approachable. Between the clean, simple riffs and lilting melody of "towne breathe" to the distorted guitar groans of "what you say", the album is an excellent display of Fiterre's recording fluency.
Cartoon Monster's "The Dying Sea" embodies the experimental spirit of today's independent music while embracing the wholesomeness of early folk music." |
|
|
Catwalk
"Past Afar" 7"
(Yay!) |
$5.00
|
Yay! says: "These young popsters are back with another bag full of fun! Get ready for some more sparkly, shimmering guitars and coy harmonies."
Finest Kiss says: "Apparently Oxnard, California has a killer scene at the moment and Yay! records has signed every single band in the scene. Catwalk's second single for the label is a sad, energetic beauty that has elements of the Close Lobsters as well as Blueboy. How can you get any closer to heaven than that?" |
|
|
Charlie Mcalister/Eric Ostrowski
"The Year Of Suspended Sap" CD
(Friends And Relatives) |
$5.00
|
Friends And Relatives says: "Charlie mcalister (the reigning king of lo-fi south Carolina-twinged pop garble) recorded 19 spoken word pieces during a tour of the west coast 2 years ago and then sent the recordings to eric ostrowski (seattle-based filmmaker & musician of noggin) who then laid accompanying violin and electronics pieces within the recordings. packaged within dvd cases, featuring amazing full color artwork! edition of 100 copies."
Lost Sound Tapes says: "This is a wonderful CD full of bizarre, twisted tales from the brain of Charlie Mcalister. Mind melting backing tracks by Eric Ostrowski. You might need to take a break in the middle." |
|
|
Charlie Mcalister/Rollin Hunt
"Split" Cassette
(Folktale) |
$5.00
|
Folktale says: "Charlie Mcalister offers up a fresh batch of manic folk songs dredged up from the marsh lands of South Carolina, while Rollin Hunt on the other hand entices you to enter his dream world, but as enchanting as that is, it will probably come much more like some kind of nightmare. This cassette is catchy and fun, at the same time that it's bizarre and terrifying. But this match couldn't be more perfect, and may just leave you staring at your stereo wondering what hit you. Did that asteroid scheduled to hit earth in 2012 arrive early and cause the magnetic fields to reverse all too soon? Are we ready for this? Comes on pink cassettes, in standard cases with full color J-cards and two inserts." |
|

Scotch Tapes says: "This tape features a ton of their 7"s compiled into one great album. Plus a couple of unearthed gems just for this tape!"
Three Imaginary Girls says: "I imagine that the six members of this band probably have the time of their lives when they get together. Any band that has given themselves such a goofball moniker and plays such giddy sounding pop/punk should sound as freewheeling and anxious as Coconut Coolouts does." |

Emmett And Mary
"The Summer's Pull" Cassette
(My Idea Of Fun) |
$5.00
|
Jezebel says: "Johnstown, PA is home of one of the most vibrant, dedicated artist collectives in the United States. Quite a bit like the Elephant Six group in structure, the My Idea of Fun collective is united not so much by sound as by common interests: to make art and music together.
Emmett and Mary is a musical more than it is an album. Locher and Bell, credited parenthetically as Emmett Karson and Linus Mansfield, respectively, are joined by a cast of a couple dozen additional singers, all given characters to play, no matter how small the role."
Lost Sound Tapes says: "Yes, it's actually packaged in a tiny milk carton! Only 30 copies made. If you like Super Famicom or Neutral Milk Hotel you'll probably like this too. Download/preview the cassette, click here" |

*Featured!* Endless Bummer, The
"Modern American Calypsos For Voice And Computer" Cassette
(Life's Blood) |
$5.00
|
Lost Sound Tapes says: "This is one of the most appropriate album titles I've heard in quite some time. The Endless Bummer goes electronic, adds some funky beats, yet still conveys the same fun, positive, and quasi-educational vibe. It contains some re-recorded tracks from their previous two releases as well as some brand new tracks. 7 songs in all. A brilliant EP." |

Everyone Except Me
"Sidewalks" CDR
(Acosm) |
$5.00
|
Myspace says: "Over the years, Michelle has become increasingly outraged by women’s role in music, especially in the rock community. Hence, she set out to try and change the perception that they cannot deliver anything other than a transparent love song with one guitar and her voice. Though Michelle’s background is rooted in Central New Jersey’s punk rock community, everyone except me’s music is almost entirely acoustic and very anarcho-folk oriented. EEM plays shows and open mics, but plays most often on Philadelphia street corners. Everyone except me is willing to play anywhere at anytime for little or no pay (I will play your living room, basement, attic, backyard, that little room you've got underneath the stairs, under a bridge, behind a dumpster, in your car, on your favorite steet corner, or wherever), just for the love of music." |

For The Agenda
"Non Von Neumann Anti Machine" Cassette
(Self Released) |
$3.00
|
The Bat And The Bird says: "for the agenda makes music for inquisitive spirits, those who have spent enough nights staring at the bottom of a bottle to know sometimes 'there just needs to be a human voice. it doesn't matter what you say.' the kind of person that might dedicate their free time to imagining up oddities like the 'vampire octopus' (or better yet, seeking them out) or laugh at the thought of an apocalyptic war against the animal kingdom..." |

Fuck Montreal
"Winter Mange" 7"
(Stumparumper) |
$5.00
|
Stumparumper says: "'Winter Mange' is Fuck Montreal's debut vinyl release after countless previous releases on just about every other kind of media available (tape, cdr, vhs, who knows what else?), and it's a stunner. Over 14 minutes of music is crammed onto this small platter, taking full advantage of a format that is too often relegated to carrying 4 minutes of music...TOTAL. This is rare music - one reviewer compared FM to Blood on the Wall, the Swirlies, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Harvey Milk, Mudhoney, Sonic Youth, and the Unicorns, all in a single review. It is music that comes from a space that you or I can't know...it has always been here, and will still be around for download after everyone's gone. There is nothing in the way except the sound." |

If the retro girl group tinged rock tunes weren't catchy enough to be worth the purchase price - they have wonderful pop culture sprinkles on top. Among the dialogue included at the beginning of songs is a teen girl moment of longing from the made for t.v. classic Sooner Or Later, and a Steve McDonald quote from Dave Markey's cult classic Desperate Teenage Lovedolls." |

Inchworms
"Inchworms" Cassette
(Cereal Records) |
$4.00
|
Cereal Records says: "This cassette was recorded in one full day. Half of the album in a small sized living room in Sammamish, Washington and the other half recorded on a reel-to-reel 24 track in an old fire department building (the Department of Safety) in Anacortes, Washington. Songs like 'Sebadoh' and 'Lake Union' bring heavy overtone and thought-out musical placement, while lo-fi songs like 'Candle Wax Fires' and 'Half My Head' give the album a genuine homemade feel."
Lost Sound Tapes says: "This release definitely has an Unread Records feel - stripped down, bedroomy, acoustic, folk pop. Authentic." |
|
|
Inchworms
"NB b/w Spencer Sult" Cassette
(Cereal Records) |
$3.00
|
Lost Sound Tapes says: "2 song cassingle from Redmond, WA's Inchworms aka Gio of Cereal Records. The two best Inchworms tracks to date, NB is a summertime jam that makes you wanna bask in the pacific northwest sunshine and the B-side is a melodic, trebly, instrumental named after a NW good guy. Guitar and drums, simple lo-fi indie pop. Sounds like it's straight out of 1994 with vocals recorded in the bathroom. Each track gets one side of tape and plays twice. Why? I dunno, but it's just crazy enough to work." |

Junior Low
"Junior Low" Cassette
(Leftist Nautical Antiques) |
$5.00
|
Leftist Nautical Antiques says: "Heavy, shoegaze zoners on behalf of the dark horse of the Denver scene's Junior Low. Edition of 100 black cassettes with j-cards designed by Bradley Wakefield." |

Justin Clifford Rhody/A. Restrepo
"Split" 7"
(Friends And Relatives) |
$5.00
|
Bring Back The Magic says: "Justin's side is 6 or so short songs played with acoustic guitars, toys, and sometimes just his voice. Some of my favorite lo-fi songs. Andrew's side is 2 acoustic songs that are more like you might expect acoustic songs to sound like. So good." |
|

Justin Clifford Rhody/Gal And Lad

Kevin Huelbig Jr.
"Summer Is Over" Cassette
(Monotone Tapes) |
$4.00
|
Shmat says: "This is a great, folksy release of 8 songs in the vein of East River Pipe and Galaxie 500. And like F.M. Cornog from ERP, Huelbig has a knack for using otherwise cheesy effects such as reverb/echo in such classy way. In his hands, the effects and layering of instruments become folk interpreters that help bring out the best in the tracks; the slight droning guitar chords start to sadly shimmer a bit more than normal and the atmosphere gets pensively rustic. The Shmat was highly pleased with the beautiful, windswept character of this release. Out on Monotone Recordings." |

Legionaires
"Super Soft" Cassette
(Leftist Nautical Antiques) |
$5.00
|
Leftist Nautical Antiques says: "Having recently returned from a hiatus in London it is only appropriate that this cassette comes from the London group Legionnaires. A four song EP of crunchy (more like leaves underfoot rather than Grape Nuts), irresistibly catchy pop tunes. Chocked full of sensibilities and influences from all across the spectrum, this tape will be instantly familiar whilst simultaneously refreshing. It rollicks through the first three songs and then ends with a massive, top of the pops style number which brings to mind pre-Raconteurs Brendan Benson. You may get calf cramps from all the foot tapping. Housed in turquoise 80’s style j-cards complete with Dolby markings and a dude wearing a Devo tee designed by Josh from Legionnaires. Dubbed on obnoxious toxic green cassettes in an edition of 100." |

Lettuce Prey
"JC/AC" Cassette
(Monotone Tapes) |
$4.00
|
Shmat says: "Certainly, Lettuce Prey would have gotten me to listen to their cassette EP simply on the name alone. And with a title like Jesus Christ Air Conditioner, I sort of envisioned this cassette tape to assault me with some wacked out synth or metal driven ska smorgasborg. I was pleasantly surprised that the songs are more of the acoustic folk persuasion. The principal (and only) band member, Mike Lenert, has been writing songs as Lettuce Prey for more than 15 years. Overall, the tracks would probably be enjoyed most by proponents of lo-fi guitar heroes like Lou Barlow. The guitar playing on the tape often reminds me of his Sentridoh period and Lenert's voice is not too far removed from his style of singing as well. This unusual wordplay makes the songs worth more than the casual listen. Very enjoyable material, and out on Monotone Recordings." |
|
|
Lettuce Prey
"Early Years" Cassette
(Monotone Tapes) |
$4.00
|
Shmat says: "With Lettuce Prey, you always get a combination of slow-core folk with some sporadic usage of faster tempos and a jammy sort of rustic instrumentalism that almost reminds me of something Celtic or Irish or even Indian. Its even a bit spooky sounding at times. "Sky Queen" is a good example of this mixture with its wiggly vocals and fast strumming acoustic guitar. There are also weird little quirky quips like the Velvet Underground -sounding "Bee Line For Yr Love". "Tel" is moody and nearly wordless in dropped D tuning. "No Star Loan Star" shines in a bit of a Barlowish way with a great chorus. 'A Bedroom Pastoral' is so relaxing that it makes me want to melt away around the sofa playing checkers with a friend until 3 am. All in all, another satisfying tape for my collection." |
|
|
Lil Hospital
"The Universe Sucks" 7"
(Hugpatch) |
$5.00
|
Indie Pages says: "Lil' Hospital go from a nice bedroom pop project to a good pop band to a veritable indiepop powerhouse, only to have them break up right at their prime. And we only get a measly 5-song EP on the way out! Lil' Hospital have improved in every way: Kevin's songs and playing are both better, and the band (now a trio, rounded out by Mat Specific Heats and Frank Besties) are tighter and punchier than ever." |
|
|
Low Fire
"I Didn't Reject The World (The World Rejected Me)" Cassette
(Monotone Tapes) |
$4.00
|
Lost Sound Tapes says: "Low Fire is the solo project of Niklas Steffensen of Denmark. 32 tracks of pure outsider folk. A collection of songs written/improvised/recorded from 1999 thru 2004. A curious mix of intense acoustic guitar folk songs, noisy electric guitar freak out, tape collage, and touches of indie pop. Expect discordant songs immediately after the most beautiful or catchy songs. This album is reminiscent of Lou Barlo's Sentridoh recordings." |
|
|
Madeline Ava/Chris Clavin
"Split" Cassette
(Plan-It-X) |
$3.00
|
Lost Sound Tapes says: "This is not the Madeline who has previously released the albums 'White Flag', 'Kissing And Dancing', etc. This is Madeline Ava, who is also from the south. She plays 'simple chords on the ukulele and sing uncomplicated songs about boring things that mean the world to me.' Chris Clavin is Chris from Ghost Mice, Plan-It-X, and Captain Chaos. This time he plays ukulele and piano. Sings songs about following your dreams."
Madeline Ava says: "I have a new cassette tape release on Plan-It-X. It is a split with Chris Clavin of Ghost Mice fame! If you ever run into me or Chris, you can get it for 3 dollars! It is exciting and yellow and it has a french fry on it!" |

Manners
"Look Into Look Unto" Cassette
(Sun Of Bees) |
$4.00
|
Mango Nebula says: "Manners is the man Greg Beson, sometimes called Beesun Greggy, The Son of Bees, or Honey Photosynthesis.
The sounds center around meditative guitar and Greg's whispery-as-the-wind vocals. It's spiritually nostalgic like deja vu in reverse, the music already familiar with you.
'Breath of Your Heart' and 'Knives' are both tragically beautiful. The latter having the shivering line "I wear a coat of knives. Try and hold me." Although, It's good to know that if you're ever out a need a knife, you can always get one from Greg's coat." |

Just as the case is with the YAY! label, Maria too just keeps getting better and better with every new release! On this lovely three track 7” single every song is an a-side and a reason to bounce around quite frenetically! If you’re into jangly pop with boy/girl vocals and if you’ve ever fancied bands like Orange Juice, The Pastels, Cause Co-Motion!, Sea Lions or Second-Hand Furniture you’ll soon have Maria spinning on that turntable of yours. Master Redactors
"Rock & Roll Revenge" Cassette
(Stumparumper) |
$4.00
|
Stumparumper says: "Master-redactors is Kevin Oliver, Ben Falk, and two guitars. That’s all they need. These two guys write some of the most outstanding songs I’ve ever heard; each side of the tape contains about 17 songs (some not much more than 7 seconds long) which manages to create two absolutely mesmerizing side-long tracks. One of my favorite cassettes EVER!!! Dubbed straight from the master on chrome tapes, edition of 40." |

Lost Sound Tapes says: "The tape you may have heard about but only in passing and you never actually saw a hard copy. This is Nana Nemo! National Splits, The
"Grab The Bottle And Run To The Hill" 7"
(Bumble Bear) |
$5.00
|
Indie Pages says: "Wow, Mike sure has come a long way from the Mathlete records from a couple years ago. Heck, I'd even say this sounds better than the cd he just put out! This five song ep has a more natural sound, with acoustic based songs, augmented with clean electric guitar, organ (and I don't mean a Casio), and tambourines and other assorted percussion."
Lost Sound Tapes says: "This is one of the best bedroom folk pop EPs of all time! Buy this, it's a classic. Mike Downey also used to be in the band WOLFIE. 'The Light, The Heat' has a chorus about the movie 'Say Anything'. What are you waiting for??" |

Nicole Kidman
"Teen Worship" Cassette
(Obeast Tapes) |
$5.00
|
Obeast Tapes says: "Nicole Kidman is Jon Barba of Ports o Call fame. The dude has been a huge boon to the burgeoning West Covina underground music scene booking many shows at his home, and releasing music zines and mixtapes to a pretty broad audience. Nicole Kidman is his venture into the world of weirdo-folk, 90s emo rock, and partly demented but wholly compelling song writing. Those who know Jon will understand what I mean when i say this tape is Miley-Centric, those who don’t will surely figure it out with one listen. But dont stop at one listen, his songs are catchy and inspiring. He lifts you up by dragging himself down. Like jesus, we all owe him some serious playthroughs. Comes with full color art on a double-sided jcard with full lyric inserts and free album downloads. Ltd to 50." |
|
|
Nicole Kidman
"Nicole Kidman" Cassette
(Folktale) |
$5.00
|
Folktale says: "This cassette is probably one of the finest things we’ve released to date. Picture this, a young man standing behind his Casio keyboard, his face covered with an elephant mask constructed out of cardboard and duck tape. His hands are shaking as he starts to play a simply melody, you start to nod your head a little and then a beat drops accompanied by a shaky voice and you’re whole body becomes covered in goose bumps. His songs are nostalgic, sad, and brutally straight from the heart. It’s like being 16 again and sitting in your room listening to cassettes after you got sent away from the dinner tape. The songs cover the age old topics of life, love, and depression in a way that hits incredibly close to home. This is a collection of 9 brilliantly constructed pop songs that will stay stuck in your head for days. Come on blue foil cassette packaged in a three color, neon fur, silkscreened cassette box and a full color insert." |

No Paws (No Lions)
"No Ghosts" Cassette
(Bridgetown Records) |
$4.00
|
FMLY says: "Having worked for a couple years as a duo after the departure of co-singer Jillian, Inland Empire darlings No Paws (No Lions) are now reconstituted as a trio with the addition of their friend Miranda. To celebrate the new line-up, they've released No Ghosts on Bridgetown.
The band's previous recordings are so washed-out and treble-filled that it’s sometimes hard to listen to them. No Ghosts sounds great though, thanks to better vocal mixes and some much-needed low end. The record finally does justice to some No Paws classics, including the glorious nursery rhyme 'I've Always Been Content'." |

Nocturnal Feeding
"Cathy's Motorcycle" 7"
(Green Tape) |
$5.00
|
Still Single says: "Has an old homemade Mountain Goats(e) feel to it. I like it, although next time you might want to clearly label sides 'A' and 'B,' because as of now I can't tell if my favorite song is 'Mutilated Teenage Bodies' or 'Rooms Filled with Toxic Chlorine Gas.' Hey kid, you write some catchy tunes (your voice is gawky and tuneless, like a one-balled Big Bird, but I think we can work with that)"
Lost Sound Tapes says: "Nocturnal Feeding = Andrew Restrepo = A. Restrepo and the Older Siblings!" |
|
|
*New!* Nocturnal Feeding
"Some Terrestrial Device" Cassette
(Let's Pretend Records) |
$5.00
|
Let's Pretend Records says: "Teenage sexscapes and psychodramas in the dusty haze of cheap highs. Las Vegas is a dark place especially when channeled from Bloomington, Indiana through the dirty mouth of the desperately self-medicated. This dude'd rather be in a tranced-out sludge metal band called 'Deformed Birth', but, admittedly, does not have the chops for it. This is acoustic in a way that makes everything seem unpromising and gives you the feeling that something real bad's about to happen. 100 copies, or so, or whatever."
Lost Sound Tapes says: "Nocturnal Feeding = Andrew Restrepo = A. Restrepo and the Older Siblings!" |

Pangea
"Never Not Know Nothing" 7"
(Stress Domain) |
$5.00
|
Stress Domain says: "Pangea return to vinyl! This time with a 4 Song 7", and boy have they cranked it up a few notches since the split with Harvest Moon Society in 2007. Pangea has progressed from a (typically acoustic) two-piece, to a full, five-piece electric wall of sound. Quite different then their previous releases, and I mean this in a nothing but positive way. The production value on this is amazingly loud, powerful, and bursting with energy." |

Pe-Rad
"Pe-Rad" Cassette
(Leftist Nautical Antiques) |
$5.00
|
Leftist Nautical Antiques says: "The Pe-Rad (pronunciation key for Parade, therefore pronounced Parade) boys are recent alums of the uni I’m currently in attendance of and I saw them play in a basement last year right about the time I was brainstorming LNA and thought to myself, 'Tape.' So, this baby has been a long time coming but now that its here I'm ecstatic. These tunes are groooovy. The guitar noodles and twangs it's way through the steady, driving bass whilst the tom toms bang tribally thru the background. Ever so slightly reminiscent of Abe Vigoda, but pe-rad is really its own beast. Complete with raise yr fist vocals, pe-rad is best listened to LOUD. Limited to 100 lovingly made cassettes." |

If you like Belle and Sebastian, Sebadoh or Radio Dept. you will like them, i can even tell that they seems a bit of Rogue Wave specially on their earlier works." |

|
Ryan Doyle
"Campaign To Kill The Sparrows" Cassette
(Monotone Tapes) |
$4.00
|
Shmat says: "The first 8 songs on Campaign To Kill The Sparrows are like tiny mystical thought fragments encased in tape hiss and an abstract tapestry of spoken and sung phrases. I only had a walkman to play this stuff with. So through headphones, the variety of vocal pannings was almost disorienting. When Doyle slurs almost drunkenly on the pretty 'Rookie Valentine #2', it only serves to heighten the honesty and heartfelt nature of the material on this tape. The second side continues the more formulated song trend, proving to be nice and compact folk/pop ditties. For those who need concrete comparisons, i could throw out a couple names: Palace Brothers, maybe a little Half Japanese. I don't think Doyle will ever be accused of being boring." |

Rok Lok Records says: "Amazing West Coast lo fi indie surf punk. For fans of Eric's Trip, The Beach Boys, Husker Du, Cause Co-Motion, and early Tullycraft. The tape on Fox Pop Recording Co has been blowing my mind for months now and I can't get it to leave my tape deck." |

Scribbler
"My Old Lady" 7"
(Stumparumper) |
$5.00
|
Stumparumper says: "6 songs, nearly 13 minutes of music made especially for Scribbler's extensive Canadian tour in March. One side beautiful and moving folk, the other an electrified aural thrashing of your senses. Is it really the same band? This long-playing 7" does an excellent job of evoking the excitement of seeing the band live or at work with a 4-track - the rawness of the music, the snide comments of the audience, and the emotion put forth by the band. One is able to hear the many sides of Scribbler on only 2 sides of wax.
Edition of 300 (half of which went to the band) on black vinyl with hand-silkscreened and numbered jackets and hand-drawn labels." |

Snowstorm
"Snowstorm" Cassette
(Monotone Tapes) |
$4.00
|
Indie Pages says: "Most of Kevin's music that I've heard in the past (and most of the Monotone catalog, for that matter) has been pretty low key and quiet acoustic stuff, and though this is still acoustic-based, the songs are quite upbeat and catchy. So it should come as no surprise that it's my favorite thing that I've heard from Kevin to date! Though this is a solo release, there are usually at least two guitars playing together (often doubling or even exchanging melodies), along with frequent keyboards and drums (or at least some form of percussion). Still pretty lo-fi, of course, but it does sound really good overall. Musically, I'd have to say the closest resemblance is to the early Moon Socket stuff, but with a little more consistency and without the extraneous sounds. Plus the songs are all pretty short, so we've got ten of 'em in twenty minutes! Though the band's name may suggest winter, this is more for the winter days when the sun is shining bright and you can go out and enjoy the foot of snow all around you." |

|
Stoves, The
"Come On Along" 7"
(Monotone Tapes) |
$5.00
|
Shmat says: "Presented here are two humble folk songs from New Jersey's The Stoves, comprised of Ryan Doyle and Kevin Huelbig, Jr. 'Come On Along' has a laid back feel that sounds sort of like the Kings of Convenience but while those Norwegian balladeers often sing their harmonies straight up using thirds, The Stoves employ a sort of threaded call and response to create a nicely bleak voicing, almost like stream of consciousness talking. But 'Speechless' has more of a shoegazey rather than folk feel to it and might feel right at home on a Field Mice album. Again, the two voices rotate to provide a nice counterpoint against both strumming and picking from the acoustic guitar. Good stuff." |

Summer We Went West, The
"Last Recordings" Cassette
(Self Released) |
$3.00
|
Achilous says: "All I believe exists from Maryland's emo greats The Summer We Went West. Shaky vocals, heartfelt, yet sometimes comical lyrics and fun, twinkly guitar lines. Take the awkward wit of Kinsella-esque projects and combine it with a campfire sing along fully supplied with whiskey and you have The Summer We Went West...the perfect band to listen to while drinking alone. Members went on to form Monument (which you should also check out).
For Fans of: On the Might of Princes, Braid, Superstitions of the Sky, Make Believe, Monument". Also see Cap'n Jazz. |

Finest Kiss says: "Horns, horns, horns! It’s easy to forget how much a great horn line in a song can just put it over the top. This ranks up there with Brideshead's Real Art as a killer pop song with a more killer horn hook." |

*Featured!* *New!* Top Surprise
"Everything Must Go" Cassette
(Pug Records) |
$5.00
|
Pug Records says: "Everything Must Go , Top Surprise’s debut, was produced by Le Almeida (Coloração Desbotada) and Paulo Casaes (Fujimo) during two drunken days at brothers Andre and Daniel’s apartment. Vocals were recorded in the bathroom, guitars in the living room and drums in dad’s bedroom, to the neighbors’ despair. The results sound as strong as any recent “shitgaze” record you’ve heard — but with a subtlety only someone who worked as a telephone operator could conceive. Hysterical guitars and joggly drums explode into the songwriting, with female backing vocals resembling bees inside the speaker. From the obvious admiration of American college rock to hints of post-punk, the EP ends with a folk-tinged incursion into Jeff Mangum/Elliott Smith territory."

Tradewinds
"6 Songs" 7"
(Gilgongo Records) |
$5.00
|
Gilgongo Records says: "Highly addictive and obscured pop-punk from Tempe, AZ circa 2008. Featuring members of Foot Ox (Teague), Splinter Cake (Kelly)
and the "French Quarter" live band (Preston), this is unpolished, upbeat and "real", in the vein of The Bananas and for fans of Lehigh Valley's late 90's scene.

Tyson Ballew
"The Summer Of Dodos" Cassette
(Tummy Rock) |
$3.00
|
Missoula Independent says: "There's something a little bit Billy Joe Armstrong about Tyson Ballew's vocals—the way he sings about crushes made me recently unearth Green Day’s 1,039/ Smoothed Out Slappy Hours just to hear 'The One I Want.' That said, the local troubadour injects his own dramatic notions of love into his newest album, and darkens them with an end-of-the-world earnestness.
In fact, Ballew might be the perfect acoustic guitarist to hang out with during the apocalypse, mostly because his angst is cradled in starry-eyed acceptance for whatever excitement—good or bad—happens next. (Erika Fredrickson)" |

Uma nova orquidia
"O conjunto nova esperanza" CDR
(Transfusao Noise Records) |
$5.00
|
Lost Sound Tapes says: "Uma nova orquidia started as an intentionally lo-fi side project of Le Almeida in 2004. A 4-piece band of two guitars, bass, and drums. The band plays pop songs but they can also sound fierce! This EP was recorded on cassette tapes at three different locations and it sounds awesome. 'O conjunto nova esperanza' is their final release and the best one yet."

Up Set, The
"Making a Connection with the Ground" CDR
(Workaholics on Holiday) |
$5.00
|
Workaholics on Holiday says: "The first american (well, the first non-danish) band to grace the w-o-h! catalog is the Up Set - usually a solo outfit for K.B. Blankson, but here, he's accompanied by a backing band. Compared to previous stellar lo-fi/twee releases from K.B., this pro-printed cd-r is a pleasantly surprising upgrade - to charming, amped up indie pop/rock. Let's make a connection with the dancefloor! (comes with a 1" button.)
Songs: 1. a melody for melanie / 2. i'll be seeing you / 3. my present absence / 4. hurry up and wait / 5. i'm not pulling your leg / 6. couldn't lose our youth"
NOTE: CDR limited to 100 copies. |

Various Artists
"Holiday 4-Way" 7"
(Stumparumper) |
$5.00
|
Stumparumper says: "I asked these bands to come up with a Christmas song, original or otherwise, and they all delivered on a level about 6 stories higher than I had ever hoped. Banned Books kicks things off with a punk song about what might or might not happen with the snowman sitting in your front yard. Granny Frost turns up the bass fuzz for a scathing (and non-sequitur) take on the holiday season. Hoop Dreams rocks from the perspective of Joseph, step-father of Jesus, and Fuck Montreal close it out with their rendition of 'Do You Hear What I Hear?'. Front cover art by the enigmatic MC Nugget, back cover by the H.A.N.S.!" |

*New!* Velma And The Happy Campers
"Songs About Parking Lots" Cassette
(Scotch Tapes) |
$5.00
|
Last.fm says: "Shit happens when you listen to records and read comic books. Despite the whole 'and the Happy Campers' thing Velma plays all the instruments and as of now just shows up with a guitar, a pedal, and a bass amp to play shows."
Lost Sound Tapes says: "Stripped down, acoustic, bedroom folk." |

*Featured!* Watercolor Paintings
"With The Light On" 7"
(Yay!) |
$5.00
|
Phoning It In says: "Rebecca writes the songs, plays the harp, and is also in Girl Band and maybe Sausage Dog. Josh (aka Hoshwa) plays the baritone ukulele, sometimes records as Cave Babies, and is the dancing genius behind the 5...4...3...2...fun!! radio show. Don't let Joanna Newsom or the Renaissance Festival lull you into thinking there's only one way to skin a harp, though. Watercolor Paintings make intimate and perfect Impressionistic pop songs, a far-cry from psych-folk pretensions, or any pretensions at all, really."

*Featured!* Watercolor Paintings
"Open Your Mouth" CD
(Destructo Chard) |
$5.00
|
Lost Sound Tapes says: "10 tracks of ukulele & harp sibling sweetness, their first proper full length album! It's exactly what you've been waiting for."
Indiepages says: "This debut cd of theirs is their best work to date. A few of the songs on here have been previously released in various forms, but these recordings capture the band at their best. Clocking in at just over 17 minutes, these ten brief songs are both super-sweet and heartbreaking, with a fragile instrumentation of harp and ukulele backing Rebecca's dulcet voice (as well as her brother Josh's occasional backing vocals)."

Wonder Wheel
"Succotash Xs" Cassette
(Life's Blood) |
$5.00
|
Life's Blood says: "Expertly home-recorded krautgaze by the fiercely prolific Paul Rosales. Dangerously compressed and unrelenting rhythms sync with in-the-pocket washes of guitar; effortless pop melodies, brilliant tambourine clang, and effected vocal refrains sit atop. What comes from this fine-tuned apparatus is totally human and its deeply-seated momentum is remarkable." |
